What We Found When We Cut It Open

But when we cut into the premium one? No big glue mess. Instead, we saw neat rows of stitching that looked like little ribs running down the spine.
This is called sewn binding (also known as Smyth sewing or lock stitching in the industry). Printers fold the pages into small groups called signatures, then sew them together with strong nylon and cotton-blend thread using specialized machines. It’s not gluing the book—it’s actually sewing it.
The Amazing Flat-Lay Experience
Ever try to write across two pages and end up fighting the book? You have to press down hard with your elbow just to keep it open. That’s the frustration of glue-bound notebooks.
With sewn binding, the pages connect through flexible threads at the folds. That gives the whole book block way more movement. It opens a full 180 degrees and lies completely flat with zero effort. Many high-end notebooks add a thin layer of high-quality flexible glue over the sewn spine for extra stability and a cleaner look. It’s the best of both worlds. As long as you’re not deliberately ripping pages out, this notebook will probably outlast your interest in it.
